FAQs about Mexican immigration

Legal advice not only provides guidance but also increases the chances of obtaining favorable results.

When faced with a legal matter, one of the first questions that arises is: What are the chances of success if I handle it alone versus having a lawyer?

It’s vital to understand that the legal system is complicated and full of nuances that can determine the outcome of a case.

Do I need a visa to travel to Mexico?

It depends on your nationality and your reason for travel. 63 countries and regions do not need one to enter as visitors without paid activities. See the full list.

Can I enter Mexico with a US visa?

If your nationality needs a Mexican visa, a valid visa from the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom or the Schengen Area can replace it for a visitor entry.

What is the Multiple Migration Form (FMM)?

It is the document that proves you are in Mexico legally as a visitor, for up to 180 days. If you arrive by air, you do not fill out a form: it is generated digitally. If you arrive by land, you must present it completed at the immigration checkpoint.

How long can I stay as a visitor?

Up to 180 days at most. The immigration officer sets your departure date. To stay longer or work, you need another process, such as temporary residence.

How and when are residence permit fees paid?

The foreign national pays them directly, generally by credit or debit card, at the INM in a single visit, together with biometrics, documents, interview and delivery of the card. Immigration fees change every year under Mexico’s Federal Fees Law (Ley Federal de Derechos).

Will I get my resident card the same day?

We aim to complete everything at that appointment so you leave with your card the same day. Depending on the INM office, some may take longer.
